What has changed at the top of Container Shipping?

Liner/Container / June 14, 2018

A constant in container liner industry for the last 10 years, the rank of global carriers, has been changed in April 2018.

The list of top ten container lines looks very different as seven of those in the top ten in 2010 have merged and one has entered into insolvency in a spectacular way.

Notable that the top three carriers, Maersk Line, MSC & CMA-CGM, have not changed. The three lines forming ONE were not even in the top ten container lines in 2010. This gives ONE a claim to be a real winner of the consolidation rounds as ONE is now firmly a top ten carrier in sixth position.

In below table the capacity and the market share of top 10 operators, according to Alphaliner 2018

This change at the top of container industry is not purely organic growth, but a result of carriers’ consolidation, which seems to be a strategic approach many lines adopt to cling on until other competitors fall away.
